"I find myself feeling both bemused and—to be frank—a little concerned by the plethora of adverts promoting so-called life coaching courses nowadays.

I understand that we live in a modern world that is characterised by impatience and quick-fix solutions, and that slick marketers are hellbent on cashing in on this.

But, to promote the idea that a member of the public can become a fully proficient life coach after a few days, weeks, or even months is disingenuous, to put it politely.

And promoting the idea that an inexpensive, short course can magically turn someone into a successful coach in a very specialised niche, is another.

You’ve probably seen ads like: “Become a “neuroscience coach”, or a “health and wellness coach”, or a “positive psychology coach”, or even an an “Ikigai coach”, and so on, and so on. 

What bothers me most is the subtle but real implication that life coaching, as a career, lacks real substance and that becoming a life coach is quick and simple.

As those in the know will appreciate ...

Nothing could be further from the truth!

OK, life coaching is not rocket science, and it does not require above average academic prowess. 

However, it does require highly-developed self-awareness and extensive knowledge, along with proven skill and experience in applying the many tools and techniques relevant to different clients and their unique situations.

It also requires a genuine passion for people, a mind that is both open and enquiring, and a thoroughly ethical and non-judgmental disposition.

Becoming a professional life coach and developing the capability to help others achieve positive results effectively, takes in-depth training.

In other words, training that requires one to study and understand a broad-based body of theory and exposure to many hours of practical experience in applying it.

Life coach training worth its salt—that is training that ultimately does justice to the clients one will coach—takes time and commitment. 

There are no shortcuts to achieve success in a career where your clients interests are protected by your investment in training and professional expertise. (Or, in simple terms, knowing what the heck you are doing!)

If you are thinking of becoming a life coach—and why wouldn’t you, it’s an amazingly fulfilling career—I leave you with this thought:

Unless you’re in it purely for the piece of paper, don’t be tempted to opt for one of the many cheap and superficial life coaching courses being pushed on social media.

Do this properly! Get it right. Don’t rush it.  

Choose life coach training that is comprehensive, in-depth and broad-based. 

By doing so, you'll avoid that uncomfortable feeling of being out of integrity—or 'imposter syndrome'—when you are wanting to start your coaching practice. 

Oh … and you'll ensure your future clients will be in good hands, as they fully deserve to be!
